“One piece of equipment that’s always the same, plug and play operation.”

Designing a single cab that works across multiple tiers within a machine line gives heavy equipment OEMs a powerful way to simplify engineering, accelerate production, and reduce lifecycle costs. Standardizing around one modular cab architecture also makes it easier to introduce new options and technologies without constantly redesigning from scratch.

One Cab, Many Configurations

Instead of creating a different cab for every model, this approach uses one common cab platform that can be applied to base, mid-range, and premium machines. All cab-specific functions are handled within the cab via a dedicated controller and expansion I/O, while the chassis remains its own independent system that simply plugs in. That separation gives the team a cleaner architecture: the cab handles cab-specific functions, while the chassis remains a standalone system that integrates with it.

Tier-specific differences—such as fluid volume, reach height, basket style, or add-on modules like forced air systems—are handled in software rather than hardware. Operators select the machine type in a main program, which automatically presets the appropriate options while still allowing some configuration flexibility. Utilizing this approach allows an OEM to standardize the platform and keep a consistent, high quality cab on each machine, while still supporting different truck configurations.

Efficiency From Design to Production

A big goal for most manufacturers currently is speed, both in development and production. For OEMs currently relying on imported cabs that require extensive rework, a universal cab cuts out repeated wiring changes and troubleshooting on each machine. That shift to a plug-and-play design reduces labor, shortens build time, and lowers the risk of wiring-related mistakes in the field. Because technicians work with the same cab layout and interfaces across the full line, training also becomes easier and service support more consistent. This consistency helps OEMs ramp up production at their facilities and respond faster to customer demand.

Reducing Complexity Over Time

It’s also important to think long-term as you create each new machine iteration. It’s easy for heavy equipment to evolve into “Frankenstein” systems as new tiers and options are added over the years. A single-cab strategy reverses that trend by consolidating controls into one clean, unified architecture instead of layering on model-specific exceptions. As the product line grows, an OEM can introduce new features through software updates or modular add-ons rather than redesigning the entire cab. That makes roadmap planning more predictable and keeps engineering focused on innovation instead of constant rework.

Platform for Future Innovation

That focus on innovation has already supported the incorporation of new technologies, such as a CAN-based, relay-free wiper system driven by encoder feedback for precise positioning and parking. Features like this demonstrate how a standardized cab can become a testbed and rollout platform for advanced functions across the entire machine line. And partnering with GS Global Resources provides OEMs with this type of thoughtful engineering and a long-term view on how to create a scalable solution for your machine.

For complex heavy machinery, hydraulic tanks are more than just a container – it’s a system component that affects pump life, cooling, contamination control, and energy efficiency. With rising oil and fuel costs, efficiency is critical for OEMs in every industry. GS Global Resources partners with filtration experts like Schroeder Industries to combine advanced flow‑dynamics modeling with field experience and practical packaging solutions. Combining that partnership with our ability to design custom reservoirs that improve system performance while fitting tight or unique machine space requirements allows us to significantly increase the longevity and efficiency of a machine’s hydraulic system.

Why tank optimization matters

A well-designed reservoir can improve energy efficiency, reduce machine weight, lower oil and steel usage, and create space for additional machine features. According to Schroeder, poor reservoir design can create dead zones where fluid stagnates, limit effective volume utilization, and increase fluid velocity in ways that reduce deaeration performance. These inefficiencies can be identified through digital simulations and CFD analysis, then corrected with improved tank geometry and in-tank filtration strategies. Our partnership with Schroeder allows us to use that technology to truly understand an OEM’s reservoir needs. And rather than forcing a standard tank into a machine, our pragmatic engineering expertise allows us to evaluate available envelope space, performance targets, cooling needs, suction location, and return flow paths to create a reservoir that fits the application.

Engineered for real machine constraints

Every machine platform presents different packaging and performance constraints, which is why custom reservoir design matters. GS Global Resources can work from your available space and application requirements to develop a reservoir that balances performance, manufacturability, and serviceability.

This is especially important when a standard off-the-shelf tank is too large, poorly shaped, or unable to support the thermal and fluid-management demands of the system. In those cases, a custom solution can improve both the engineering outcome and the long-term economics of the machine.

Tangible benefits for OEMs

Reservoir optimization can deliver measurable advantages across the machine platform. Schroeder highlights benefits such as increased energy efficiency, reduced tank size and fluid volume, lower weight, steel and oil savings, CO2 reduction, and more available space for other machine features.

For heavy equipment, that can translate into:

“A drive allows us to adjust those flow rates and how much compression they actually have, which will save them on energy, but we’re also not running the motors as hard, extending the life of the motors as well.”

For industrial equipment or other heavy machinery, the introduction of variable frequency drives is more than just a control upgrade. It is really more a long-term cost reduction strategy. By matching motor speed to what’s actually required for an application, VFDs reduce wasted energy, lower mechanical stress on hydraulic components, including pumps and compressors, and help extend service life across the entire system. The result is less heat, less wear, fewer unplanned failure and downtime, and a more efficient machine that costs less to operate over time.

Through our decades long partnership with Danfoss Drives, GS Global Resources is incredibly familiar with the latest drive options and how to utilize them in certain applications, like food and beverage, to optimize how these systems run. In the video above, one of our account managers, John Wambold, discusses how a customer in the brewing industry utilizes the FC302 drive from Danfoss to limit downtime and adjust to different technical needs across their manufacturing facility.

“We couple multiple drives with CBM, which is condition based monitoring. That condition based monitoring allows us to do preventative maintenance. So instead of a pump going down and stopping operations, we’re able to predictively identify that the pump is starting to fail.”

In this application, Wambold says that we pair VFDs with pumps and compressors to manage water flow and CO2 compression dynamically. For high-volume bottling, multiple units run at full capacity; during downtime, a single compressor operates at 50% speed. This flexibility prevents overworking motors, saving energy and hardware costs.

“They have drives from their older product line that has continued to evolve. Those older drives were made in early 1990s and they’re still operational.”

Wambold also discussed a recent case involved a 15-year-old drive revived by cleaning cooling channels for $100 in parts, versus thousands for replacement—completed in just one day. GS Global Resources’ Milwaukee proximity to Danfoss’ Chicago-area manufacturing facility enables same-day parts pickup and installation. Their 30-year Danfoss partnership, with daily communication and monthly strategy meetings, ensures reliable support.

Why Choose GS Global Resources for VFD Integration?

As previously stated, GS Global Resources and Danfoss have been partners for over 30 years. Our technical team offers hands-on service, from application assessment to troubleshooting, so we take the time to truly understand and assess your machine or application and ensure your machine is running smoothly and efficiently.

Bringing OEMs into the next generation of heavy equipment

Change is good but can be hard for heavy equipment operators once they’re familiar with a certain machine interface. They want the same rugged, durable components they’ve relied upon for years, but simultaneously they look for the economic benefits and comfort some new machine technologies provide. The best way to do this is keep those features at the forefront when making any kind of machine updates. Incorporate a look and feel that is approachable, like that of newer automobiles operators are using in their own lives.

GS Global Resources delivers cutting-edge control solutions that blend modern aesthetics with proven reliability for heavy machinery OEMs. In the video above, Kyle Capello, one of our Account Managers, discusses recent updates made to help modernize an existing arm pod solution.

Modernizing Control Stations

In this case, we kept the overall feel of the arm pod very similar to previous iterations, but we integrated contemporary components like intuitive input devices inspired by vehicle controls. This delivers a sleek, modern feel without sacrificing the durability operators expect from years of trusted use.

Prioritizing Operator Ergonomics

“Operators sit in these machines for very long shifts and it has to be comfortable. So a lot of care and detail is taken to make sure that the arm pod is both usable and ergonomic.”

Comfort drives our designs. We meticulously craft ergonomic pods with custom grips, indicator lights, and optimized button layouts, ensuring intuitive usability that reduces fatigue and boosts productivity. Joysticks are our bread and butter and as the primary HMI for most operators, we know to keep high-use functions at the operator’s fingertips, without causing unnecessary fatigue.

Tailored Custom Solutions

“We take the customer’s requirements, including inputs and outputs and create a custom shell.”

Starting from OEM specs—inputs, outputs, and components—every aspect of an arm pod from GS Global Resources is tailor-made for a machine. Our team engineers custom moldings, rather than utilizing off-the-shelf parts, so we can incorporate operator feedback when it comes to ergonomics and feel. Even more importantly, our extensive programming experience allows us to seamlessly incorporate this type of custom solution into the machine’s primary control system, also allowing for more simplified future updates and tweaks within the machine’s program

Proven Partnership Results

“There’s a level of trust. We’ve been working with this OEM for many, many years. The partnership means that they know we’ll come up with a superior product for their machine.”

When working with multiple vendors, OEMs will likely be faced with solutions that don’t seem cohesive or a lack of ownership over solutions, among other things. When you work with GS Global Resources, we become a true partner with the ability to own a solution at each state of the design process, working both with the mechanical design of a component, but also its integration and custom programming.

Ready to bring your armrest, console, joystick, or full operator cab into the modern era? Contact us today to start the conversation with our engineering and account management team.

The post Modernizing Joystick Pods While Maintaining Ruggedness & Durability first appeared on GS Global Resources.

In heavy equipment manufacturing, cameras, as part of complete safety systems, are critical for OEMs to enhance operator visibility, prevent collisions, and meet stringent safety regulations in harsh environments—reducing accidents by up to 40% according to industry studies. These systems provide real-time feeds for blind spots, boosting productivity while minimizing downtime. But what camera is best for your machine’s control system? And what are the first steps to take when integrating your selected control into the machine? Here are the primary considerations and things to dig into as your start the process.

Types of Cameras

SOME/IP: Scalable Service-Oriented Middleware over IP. ISO 17215 like the IQAN™ SV camera from Parker Hannifin.

RTSP: Real Time Streaming Protocol. Convoy Technology’s 1910 camera is a good example.

SOME/IP cameras offer easier setup with all configurations—resolution, framerate, mirror/flip—handled directly in IQAN Design per display page, ideal for mobile machinery safety and visibility.

RTSP requires pre-configuring the camera’s GUI for settings and defining unique URL paths, with risks of cropping on mismatched display sizes.

Essential Connection and Network Setup

Your camera connection options will depend on the display. You can connect one camera directly to IQAN MD4/MD5 Ethernet ports (keep in mind that an MD5 has one port, while an MD4 has two). You can use switches for multiples, either managed or unmanaged. While unmanaged are a lower cost, all devices must have the same IP address. Managed switches do not require you to configure the IP address on the devices, but it is a bit more costly.

If you are using a SOME/IP camera, after plugging it into your display, you can configure everything, including the size of the video and orientation, within the IQAN application. If you’re using an RTSP camera, everything must be configured within the camera itself. Also, when setting up the RTSP, you need to define the correct URL path , or it won’t present the image. That URL path may be listed in the camera manual, or you may need to use a VLC viewer to find it.

Video Resolutions and Optimization Tips

One important thing to keep in mind, especially with newer displays, like the MD5 display which can be over 12 inches wide, display size will play a role in how the camera feed is programmed. Also how the video feed shows up on your display depends on which type of camera you’re using.

For SOME/IP cameras, within IQAN, the width and heigh of your camera feed can be linked to the dimensions property, but keep in mind that there are limits for each individual camera. For example, the IQAN-SV camera only supports up to 800×600. Framerate, bitrate, mirror and flip are also set in those channel properties.

Similarly, for RSTP cameras, width and height are used to define the size of the video feed, but the video is justified to the upper lefthand corner of the display. Also, when you change that feed size from its default, it doesn’t dynamically scale. So if you use a larger size the camera resolution will result in a black border along the right and bottom edges, while a smaller size than the camera resolution will result in the image being cropped. Another note to keep in mind is that if your camera supports multiple streams, you’ll need to create multiple cameras with unique paths.

When a machine is not responding as expected, engineers and service teams need fast, reliable ways to trace the problem. In IQAN™ Design by Parker Hannifin, there are several practical troubleshooting methods that help heavy equipment OEMs diagnose machine behavior, isolate faults, and support field service more efficiently.

Why troubleshooting structure matters

For heavy equipment OEMs, troubleshooting is not just about finding a bad signal. It is about moving quickly from symptom to root cause while keeping machine configurations, service access, and software structure manageable. IQAN Design supports that workflow by giving engineers multiple ways to organize and inspect machine logic, including measure groups, live multimeter-style checking, and component navigation.

Measure groups: organized troubleshooting by function

One of the most useful ways to troubleshoot a common or repeat issue in IQAN Design is through measure groups. These let engineers collect related channels into a single view so a technician can monitor a machine function such as lift, tilt, hydraulics, joysticks, or sensors without digging through the full program.

Measure groups are especially valuable when they are built ahead of time for repeat use, which is why they are primarily used for a function group or other anticipated issue. An OEM can create a simple operator-facing group with only a few key signals, or a deeper service group with more detailed channels for advanced fault finding. They can also be configured with visibility rules so the right channels appear based on machine configuration, module selection, or enabled options.

Multimeter mode: live, flexible diagnosis

For issues that are not fully understood, IQAN’s multimeter-style workflow gives engineers a faster, more flexible way to inspect channels live. Unlike a prebuilt measure group, the multimeter approach lets users add and remove signals on the fly while they are actively troubleshooting.

This is especially helpful when a field technician is on the phone with a programmer or service engineer and needs to quickly test several signals at once. It supports a process-of-elimination approach: add the channels, observe behavior, remove what is not needed, and narrow down the fault without changing the underlying machine program.

Component navigator: trace the logic backward

The component navigator is another helpful tool when a machine output is not behaving correctly. Instead of only looking at signals in isolation, it helps engineers trace the control path backward from an output to the inputs and conditions that influence it.

This is especially useful in complex applications where logic is spread across many modules and function groups. If a lift function is not working, for example, the navigator can help reveal whether the issue is related to the joystick, seat switch, E-stop logic, or another upstream condition. For engineers who did not write the original program, that backward tracing can save a significant amount of time.

Choosing the right method

The best troubleshooting method depends on the problem and the stage of diagnosis. Measure groups are strongest when you want a repeatable, preplanned troubleshooting setup. The multimeter is best when you need something live and flexible right now. The component navigator is ideal when you need to understand how one signal is affected by many logic conditions.

A smarter service strategy for OEMs

For heavy equipment OEMs, the real advantage of IQAN Design troubleshooting is not just speed. It is the ability to build a machine application that is easier to support in the field, easier to document, and easier to diagnose across multiple configurations. GS Global Resources is the leading integrator of IQAN by Parker Hannifin and our in-house experts have experience programming in a wide range of industries to optimize both machine control and communication for OEMs. Interested in utilizing IQAN in your machines? Contact us today to find out how we can help, or sign up for our next IQAN training session to learn from the experts and get program specific tips and insight.

The post Top 3 Troubleshooting Methods in IQAN™ Design first appeared on GS Global Resources.

Even within their primary industry or type of machinery, for certain end users or final applications heavy equipment OEMs may be asked to meet very specific requirements and technical specifications, such as machinery used in military applications. Trying to both meet these different parameters while still maintaining the expected machine performance, reliability, and other important features can be a challenge. In a recent project, GS Global Resources was tasked with modifying a towing system we had created for an existing commercial tow truck OEM customer, adapting proven commercial designs for a demanding military application mounted on a tank chassis.

Innovative Tank-Mounted Design

This unique project features a fully functional towing boom integrated directly onto the rear of an actual tank—complete with treads, turret gun, and camouflage finish—setting it apart from standard truck chassis builds. The system retains core commercial towing capabilities, including a rotating boom for load pickup and rear stabilizers that deploy downward only, leveraging the tank’s low center of gravity and heavy weight despite its compact footprint.

Rigorous Military-Grade Compliance

Additional filtering and military grade heat shrink or cable shrouds provide complete environmental protection, far exceeding commercial norms.

Advanced Control Integration

Numerous innovations were highlighted by OEMs at ConExpo 2026, including machine electrification and ways to implement AI. But specifically looking at heavy equipment operator cabs, what were some trends that seemed popular across the board with new machines? A group of GS Global Resources engineers were at the show and brought back some key takeaways for the future of cab design and how OEMs can realistically implement some of these principles now.

Operator Cab Simplification Trends

Minimalist operator cabs were prevalent at ConExpo, consolidating switches, buttons, and displays to boost operator focus and eliminate sight line interruptions wherever possible. Many cabs had larger single screens, some as wide as 20–24-inch models, and many of them had camera feeds stitched together for bird’s-eye machine views. More cabs also featured heads up displays, also like the automotive industry, allowing operators to get critical machine information without looking away from their working area. Another new way to alert operators to a machine issue, LED light strips along cab pillars that flash different colors for different alerts eliminate the need for operators to look at the display or investigate each message.

Cost-Effective Thermoforming for Consoles

OEMs showcased multi-part thermoformed assemblies as a budget-friendly alternative to costly injection molding for operator consoles in heavy equipment. Layered thermoformed plastic sheets create dimensional, two-tone aesthetics, like glued multi-panel designs mimicking premium looks, while avoiding high tooling expenses.

Ergonomic Joysticks and Armrest Innovations

Several cabs and seats featured horizontal joysticks, with thumb-side buttons, similar to ergonomic computer mice, as well as low-spring tension to cut operator fatigue in prolonged heavy equipment operation. There were also a few pneumatic-assisted flip-up armrests, allowing for improved ease of access for operators with a smoother lift.

Advanced Cab Mechanisms and Doors

A few features were seen around the show that primarily focused on cab entry and exit. Linear actuators were utilized by sliding doors to have a smoother feel. Some of those doors also featured a tuck-away design. Also emphasizing the trend toward easier cab access, egress windows utilized simple push-buttons, giving operators a quicker, more reliable emergency exit.

GS Global Resources has a wide range of experience across multiple industries, including construction, rail, forestry, crane, utility and more. We are constantly investigating new technologies and manufacturing techniques to create cabs that optimize the operator experience, while still prioritizing safety and machine functionality.
