Lightweight Armrest for Electric Heavy Equipment
Heavy equipment OEMs are making strides in electric and battery technology for their machines, but those goals have trickle down effects and implications on every aspect of the machine’s design, including armrest design. Overall machine weight has a big impact on the machine’s energy use and longevity. According to the Department of Energy, a 10% reduction in vehicle weight can result in a 6-8% fuel economy improvement
In this video, one of our account managers discusses an armrest assembly we created for an electric refuse vehicle. To optimize the machine’s efficiency and range, we used aluminum for the armrest structure to keep it as light as possible. Another top goal for the OEM was to have a sleek, automotive look for the armrest, while still creating a robust product. We were able to create an armrest without seals or fasteners, giving them a very clean look using a two-piece plastic.
Additionally, we developed custom, lit keypads, including one that acts as a gear shift, with Forward, Neutral, and Drive controls. This switch panel is another PWM signal from the machine’s control system so it can communicate to the transmission, allowing the truck to drive if the CAN line wasn’t functioning.
