The Power of LSHT Motors: Boosting Performance in Heavy Equipment

Low speed high torque motors are a critical solution for heavy-duty equipment that requires high torque output, compact packaging, and dependable performance at low operating speeds. At GS Global Resources, we have over 50 years of hydraulics expertise and we take the time to fully understand a machine’s hydraulic system in order to determine what type of components meet all of the technical or application requirements, while still optimizing machine performance. In the video above, Lisa DeBenedetto, one of our account managers, discusses a recent project where we handled the hydraulic system, the IQAN program, and operator control system for a concrete screed machine. She explains that in this type of application, where a machine moves slowly but still does require a lot of torque, LSHT motors are a great fit.

Built for torque and control

“It’s much more compact and creates much less noise. Also, LSHT motors are really ideal for closed loop and hydrostatic systems.”

For this type of machine, DeBenedeetto says LSHT motors are a strong fit because the machine needs substantial force to start moving and steady power to keep rolling across concrete surfaces. Because the machine does not require high travel speed, a low speed high torque architecture is a logical fit. The direct-drive configuration also helps keep the package compact and avoids protruding drivetrain components that would otherwise affect machine layout. This is a strong example of matching motor characteristics to the functional requirements of the equipment.

Creating a Modular System for OEMs

Another interesting aspect of this screed machine is the fact that we designed it as a modular system, with the option to operate as a full vibrator screed or as a standard roller screed. In the full configuration, hydraulic vibrators demand substantial horsepower, flow capacity, and proportional control strategy to support up to 22 vibrators. DeBenedetto says, “We can take off all the vibrators and just offer it as a roller screed if that’s what an end user is looking for.” In the simplified configuration, theĀ  machine reverts to a smaller, more streamlined system. Additionally with our diverse engineering team and experience, GSGR is essentially a one-stop shop for this project. We provides electronics, programming, and hydraulic expertise as a single source, reducing coordination risk and eliminating fragmented responsibility between suppliers. DeBenedetto says, “We’re doing it all, so there is not finger pointing and it’s a really simplified partnership.” For customers developing specialized equipment, that end-to-end support can really shorten development cycles and improve execution consistency.
