How to Switch Between ISO and SAE in an IQAN® Program

A machine may need both ISO and SAE controls so it can serve more operators, more markets, and more job sites without requiring a different machine build for each preference. That flexibility also helps reduce training time and lowers the chance of operator error when someone sits in a machine configured differently than they expect.

More Flexibility. Improved Safety.

Different regions and crews often learn different control patterns, so a switchable machine lets the operator use the layout they already know. That is especially useful for rental fleets, contractors with mixed crews, and OEMs shipping the same platform into multiple markets.

It also improves safety. If an operator climbs into a machine set up with the wrong pattern, the wrong hand movement can create an unexpected machine response, which can lead to damage or injury.

For OEMs, programming both patterns into one machine simplifies product strategy because one platform can satisfy more customers. Rather than create separate programs for machines being sold to different markets, you can utilize the same central program and switch between ISO and SAE either via the code, or you can also give operators the ability to do this on a display page.

Creating a Control Placard in Your Display

It is sometimes required, but it’s also good practice, to put a control placard somewhere on your machine so the operator knows the primary controls and how to do them. An easy way to combine this with the ability to switch between ISO and SAE controls is through a display page. In the video below, we walk you through this using the example of two joystick controls for an excavator programmed in IQAN® Design by Parker Hannifin. If you choose to go this route, you should also incorporate a safeguard to prevent the operator from changing control patterns while the machine is active or under load.

At GS Global Resources, we are IQAN experts and can integrate a wide variety of features and custom hydraulics and controls into your machine’s central program. Our in-house experts also offer basic and advanced IQAN training sessions where we go through the fundamentals of IQAN Design and answer your program specific questions.
