Q&A: Migrating to Parker Hannifin’s M24 Controllers

Parker Hannifin is updating its IQAN™ controller portfolio, replacing the MC41–MC43 and XC41–XC43 units with the new M24 series. The M24 controllers are fully compatible in terms of fit, form, and function with existing MC/XC designs when operating on IQAN Design version 7 or newer. To help you understand the transition, we asked one of our IQAN experts a few questions:

What is the M24?

The “-M24” suffix is the designation for the “Life Extension” version of the module.  The Life Extension is a design update to the module that deals with component obsolescence.

Can I easily swap in the new M24 or do I need other additional components?

The M24 variant is pin to pin compatible with the original version.

Do I need to update my machine’s control program when swapping in the M24?

IQAN does not differentiate which module variant is in the application, but the IQAN version will need to be v7.03 or later.  To use the new modules, in general you will simply open the project application in IQANdesign version 7.03 or later and click “Save the Project.”  This statement assumes that the project is not using obsolete modules such as the MC2 or MD3.

Do I need to use the latest version of IQAN Design with the M24?

While the minimum supported version is v7.03, it is recommended to use the latest which is version v7.05.25.10808.

When should we move to the M24 modules?

For new applications or when projects are being updated, it is recommended to move to the -M24 variants.  Since Parker will be able to produce a finite amount of the old modules, migrating to the -M24’s will help with module availability for spares on older systems. Eventually, everyone will need to migrate to the M24 modules, so for new applications, use the new variants to get ahead of it.
