Streamlined Controls for Tight Cab Spaces
Modernizing heavy equipment means more than just updating parts—it’s about reimagining how operators interact with their machines for safety, comfort, and productivity. Recently, we were tasked by an OEM client with reimagining the operator cab for their rail car mover, giving it a more modern look, enhancing operator comfort, and optimizing cab functionality, all while preserving the narrow profile required in this application.
Control Consolidation for Efficient Operation
The legacy cab, heavily reliant on mechanical switches, a small display, and a bulky two-sided seat, no longer met current operational standards. From the outset, our team focused on consolidating controls and streamlining operator interaction to increase safety and efficiency. By integrating a single, 180°-rotatable seat outfitted with multi-function joysticks, we centralized throttle and coupler controls directly at the operator’s fingertips. This enabled seamless performance of critical tasks without requiring the operator to shift position or break concentration.
Transitioning from a mechanical dashboard, we incorporated a large touchscreen display with multiple functional pages, delivering instant access to engine diagnostics, transmission data, and other crucial machine information. The cab’s interface not only improved accessibility but also allowed for rapid adaptation to varied operational scenarios.
Even with the cab’s narrow spatial constraints, we maintained optimal ergonomics with that new seat, as well as a multi-position steering column, and strategically placed controls. Furthermore, integrating six high-definition cameras with a separate, dedicated display improved situational awareness, supporting the operator’s ability to perform movements confidently and safely.
If you’re still using legacy equipment, the right partner can revitalize those design to meet today’s expectations for comfort, control, and safety. By centering our redesign on the operator’s experience and working collaboratively across teams, we were able to get the OEM a new, updated cab, that also improved operator experience and efficiency.
