Simultaneously Improving Simplicity and Serviceability of Machine Components

It’s easy to get lost in all of the latest control innovations available for heavy machinery operation. While incorporating multiple touch screen displays and joystick controls, among other things, may appear to create a flashier solution, sometimes a simpler solution will create a much more usable end product for the operator.
Simplicity
The old adage, “less is more” can sometimes ring true for OEMs when designing operator seats. Even if your machine has the space for additional structures and extensive features, in certain instances, that can just create unnecessary cost while providing no real additional value to the operator. Take a look at the seat featured above. In it’s first iteration, there were a number of features that, while modern and somewhat flashy, really weren’t beneficial while using the machine. For example, the first version included a lift function to give operators a higher viewpoint. However, it actually distracted the operator and wasn’t always necessary for the machine’s primary function. In this case, a better alternative could be to simply provide that as an option for a certain model within the product line.
In addition to specific machine functions, control design can usually be simplified as well, ultimately creating a less expensive and more usable solution. In that same seat example, there was originally a large side console which contained a lockable storage box, cup holder, and a 3-axis joystick. However, by relocating each of these components into a different area of the machine, such as the steering console or attaching them directly to the seat, we were able to eliminate the entire box, creating a more compact and cost-effective solution.
Serviceability
By simplifying aspects of your solution, you will likely be able to simplify the maintenance of those components as well. In this instance, by eliminating that side console, we were able to condense a lot of the electrical wiring for the entire seat. By attaching a custom joystick pod, complete with 3 rocker switches, we were able to keep the electrical harness directly under the seat, as opposed to within that console. This not only made the wiring simpler to protect, but by installing a bulb sealed drawer that can pull out horizontally, technicians can very easily access all of the control wiring if there are issues.
There are times when a complex console or integrating extensive controls are the right fit for your machine. But depending on the application and environment, sometimes a simple solution can actually create a much better overall experience.
