Utilizing New Technologies for Faster and More Cost Effective Solutions
Opportunity:
An OEM wanted to develop a new custom armrest assembly for their machine. At the beginning of their discussion with the GS Global Resources engineering team, they had an idea of the design they wanted, as well as certain specifications for the accompanying joysticks and switch panels. This presents a challenge, as it is difficult to envision exactly what will work best for operators until initial prototype is created. To ensure clients are always satisfied with their finished product, GSGR engineers and technicians normally create a full, working prototype of a new design so that customers can truly understand how it will feel and work for the end user. Unfortunately, this process can be quite time consuming and any kind of revisions or changes ultimately delay the customers final timeline. To solve this issue, GSGR engineers developed a new solution to use time and resources much more efficiently and get OEMs their approved, customized solution much faster.
Solution:
GSGR invested in new, state of the art equipment that would allow our clients to actually see their proposed designs in person before creating a full prototype. This allowed them to better understand how it will ultimately benefit, or cause issues for operators, which either improves or hinders their productivity and plays a big role on their bottom line. In this instance, we were able to print a prototype of the same dimensions and design that was then presented to the client inside our existing armrest pod. Their team was then able to put themselves in the operator’s seat and see how their concept would work and feel in action. After doing that, they realized that a simpler design that kept only the most highly used functions on the main joystick and switch panels would be actually create a better, more productive experience for operators. GSGR engineers were able to work with the client’s team to create an entirely new layout and even eliminate some unnecessary functions.
Result:
- Gave client full understanding of their end product without waiting for a fully-functioning prototype
- OEM was able to see multiple life-size versions after revisions were made
- Each iteration was able to be tested by OEM much faster
