All hydraulic motors operate by causing an imbalance which results in the rotation of a shaft. In a vane motor, this imbalance is caused by the difference in the vane area exposed to hydraulic pressure.

Vane motors provide good operating efficiencies, but not as high as that of the piston motor type with horsepower ratings that correspond.

Vane motors typically consist of a cartridge assembly of a motor housing. This design is very similar to a vane pump. Two-port plates separate the inlet and outlet ports as they sandwich the rotor and cam ring between them.
